Default What to do?

So I'm going to caveate this post with trying to keep suggestions meaningful. I know spike-strips and throwing items at a vehicle are all great ideas to keep a guy from going through our small subdivision at 65 mph, but I'm looking for realistic suggestions.

Situation: there area lot of children in my subdivision. I don't have kids, but I like to do anything I can to keep our neighborhood a safe environment for them to be in and play in. Mickanole lives across the street from me, and we had speedbumps put in the subdivision to slow down traffic. This has worked great in the areas where the speedbumps are, but with a few punks that live down the street from me, it has become a virtual drag-race down between speedbumps, with speeds getting just rediculously fast down the street. I've tried yelling at them as they pass to slow down, and all I get is the finger and a horn-honk.

So what are my options? When I first PCS-ed here to Hurlburt, I was briefed by the Okaloosa Sheriff Department that if I had this sort of problem, they would set up a speedtrap in the neighborhood. The problem is that I live in Santa Rosa County, and I'm not sure it works the same way. In addition, I'm concerned that the guys are junior-enlisted military, and I may hurt their careers by bringing LEOs into the mix. So what are my options?

I'm all ears.

how did you guys manage to get the first set of bumps put in? was it done via the sub division or did the county come and put them in?. maybe it will require the people on the street to contact the main people of the sub. to have more put in at the trouble locations?.

and unless its private roads i know you cant just go and buy/make your own but you can harrase the city/county untill they have more put in

Who cares. Call LEO. 65 is way too fast in ANY neighborhood, and goes to show that he/she doesn't have any respect for others...burn his ass.

Let's try to put this into a proper perspective, what would be more harmful overall, putting a couple of irresponsible young drivers careers in jeopardy for being total moronsor permanently putting some unsuspecting young child's life in jeopardy by looking the other way??

I don't know how it is now in the military but when I was a member there was a code of conduct and some hard time doled out for those who couldn't follow the proper rules and regulations of the area in which they lived.

Have you been able to confront them one on one yet about their behavior?? Jeez, they aren't gonna get any better if they aren't aware of the concerns of the neighborhood. Maybe if you stopped by their house and told them exactly why you are upset they would understandor maybe they wouldn't but I think that you have to make an attempt before you proceed with any other options. If that came to no good, I would try to find out for sure if they are in the military, that shouldn't be too difficult and then go directly to their NCOIC and maybe have a video of them flipping you off on their way byyour house!! Tell their honcho that you are tired of them putting children's lives at risk in your neighborhood for the mere sake of showing off.

If their honcho doesn't care one way or the other, let me know.

I have people.

(Hey, I think I know that guy in your avatar!!!)

......(from a Highway Engineer) Speed Bumps and Stop Sign don't do squatfor speed control. They onlyfrustrate and slow down the law abiding citizen and create a traffic hazard. This is totally an enforcement issue(only solution). Find out who the Law Enforcement contact is for community affairs etc...and gettogether a letter/petition from the neighborhood to request increased patrols/speed trap.Ask everyone in the neighborhood to sign the petition (particularly the violators). If they get caught too bad they had fair warning and don't need to be endangering the public by acting irresponsibly.

I agree with the reply posts & maybe a stern talking to is what they need...I doubt this would seriously hurt their careers.?

I remember something like this when I was younger ... there were some residents that would put on a reflective vest and hard hat , and spray painted an old hair dryer Silver ... they would stand out near the road together , one with the Radar Detector , one with a clipboard , and would "Fake" people into slowing down ... IT WORKED too !! :clap

Don't be worried about hurting anyone's career. Taking action and getting a d-bag (military or civilian) what he deserves is A LOT better than taking no action and someone getting hurt, orworse. You can call the LEO dept, give them the street, vehicle descriptions, and times they usually go down the street. Hell, hide and video tape them if you wanna have some secret-squirrel fun. If you're in Holley by the Sea, there's cops in there anyway so it shouldn't be too much of a strain on manpower to post someone around there. I'm sure they'd be happy to oblige.

Plus, if they are military, they should know better. We get enough briefings about this stuff and just lost a couple TSgts walking their dogs to a kid ina truck.

i wouldnt worry about the punks careers. i have kids and have had to face speeders in my little subdivision. i actually got out in the street in front of one motorcyclist (i am one too) and put up my hands to stop him. he stopped. it scared him @W$#less. needless to say he didnt speed anymore down my street. i know, that is stupid and i couldve been hurt. i wasnt thinking of myself, just my kids.

a very famous local celebrity at the marina oyster barn in pensacla used a hair dryer (no cord) all black taped-up and stood at a corner of his neighborhood to foil the speeders. anyone that sees anything looking even close to a radar gun pointed at them will slow down. of course, you cant dress up in leo gear, but wear all black or something similar to "simulate" leo and they'll get the point.

also, go ahead and petition the srso for a patrol. get a petition from neighbors even better. be reasonable (as u already are) and get the srso involved. ur involvement too will be necessary. just be civil. the speeding punks will most likely respect u for doing to them what they cant or wont do to themselves. the others that dont respect u will get what they deserve.
