Dagwood (10/8/2007)I can't believe no one has mentioned Carraba's. My wife and I love that place. Anyone remember the Italian Restaurant at the entrance to the Navy base that closed a few years ago. Now that was Italian food!
Carraba's is great. Love them! But it's not really authentic Italian. More of a "Gulf Coast with an Italian flair" type of place.

Inever had the pleasure of trying Marchello's. I wish I had; I've heard nothing but great things about it.

There's a little place on Avalon that the wife and I ate at a few weeks back that was the best Italian food I have eaten to date. They had an appetizer called Sliva rolls that was awesome. I can not remember the name, but I know it started with an R.

Just curious..... I know a lot of you on here are in the Military so you may have eaten food in Italy. How many of you are comparing it to food from Italy and what you have had in the states only?

I was told by a member on this board that if you go to FRANCO'S ask for them to make it Italian notthe watered down American version.

I had a guy tell me one time that HE KNOWS WHAT REAL CHINESE FOOD TASTE LIKE... He lived in S.F. and went to CHINA town all the time. I never told him that I had been to CHINA and Hong Kong a few times. LOL...... This all came about because he said a place sucks, (Well visited place by military folks that may have been at H.K. a time or two) and I just let it ride.

I guess LOMBARDIES (sp?) in New York is REAL ITALIAN PIZZA? NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Still looking to get down to FRANCO'S and eat, the one in P'COLA.

You also have to remember WHAT REGION they are cooking from. I think SICILY is the BEST but each region is different, just like in the states.

I thought that the best seafood came from the west coast or the AdriaticSea, Best pasta was North East region, Best Pizza was in Rome and the best Sauces was hands down in SICILY.

Same as with the wine. I know I'm wrong but it seems that each region in Italy sure can make thier wine go with the food from that region.

I've eaten at Tre's Fret and IT IS AWESOME. I thought thier Med. salad was outstanding along with thier pasta. I thought they were VERY HIGH for what you got but hey, if you want authentic you will pay for it. The bread was as good or better then what I had in Italy since it was FRESH. :bowdown:bowdown

Yep, been there several times while on active duty. Several different parts of the country... North, South, Sicily.

You're absolutely correct, the different regions' cuisine vary greatly in ingredients and style. Kind of like the U.S. If you order a bowl of gumbo in New York, they may not even know what you're talking about. If they do know, it's probably gonna suck.

I left active duty 7 years ago, but I missed Italy so much I had to go back a couple years ago. Took my wife there for our anniverssary in '05. I'm hoping to make another trip within the next couple of years.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that place. I haven't been there, but I'd like to give it a try. I can't remember the name either, but I know I've heard it advertised on the radio. I don't get out that way much, so I probably won't get to try it anytime soon.

I ate alot of Italian food in Northern Italy. I was pretty dissapointed. Its not rich like American Italian at all. However, It was in restaurantsso you never know. I am sure the food cooked by the locals is much better. There was a local restaurant (no english spoken) in Florence that had someAMAZING wild boar (common in N Italy)and killer deserts.I also heared the food in Southern Italy really is much better. Guess I need to go back. On a side note. The pastry and sandwhiches (paninis) were awesome!

The place on Avalon Blvd is Recanatis. Get a lot for your money and it's not too bad. I prefer Tres Fratellis.

My bet for the best pizza is the Tuscan Oven on 9th Ave.
