Go with them to the vet, hold him in your arms while the vet does the procedure. The family member will close their eyes and go to sleep. When I did this, I thought the dogs deserve to be in my arms and feel my heart beating, knowing I was there I think it took the fear out of it for them. There is no way I could imagine letting these great friends that has given me unconditional love when I didn't deserve it to allow them to go through that not knowing where I was..... Jax was looking into my eyes when his closed. I feel he was thanking me for being there..... Okay, now off to cry for the rest of the evening..... good luck, its a hard, hard thing to do..... Don't let him suffer.....
I agree with this. I had this exact experience. I am sure my friend felt better with me there, and I know I felt better.

It's hard to know exactly when, but one day early is better than one day late.

Man, this has been a tear jerker for me to read thru. I have gone thru putting a few dogs down during my life - having them put to sleep, not shooting them, and it is always such a hard thing to do. Makes me want to never get another one just because you know there will come that day again. But I always ended up getting another one. I always thought it was unfair that mans best friend was limted to such a short life.

Man that gives me some hope. My rat terrier is 16 and it will be a sad day for sure when we have to put him down.

Had the vet come out to the house to put my lab down. He died in my arms. It's definitely one of the hardest things you'll ever do.

We've had to put 1 down. Extremely hard...We held him while the vet did it. Oh man cried and cried, bah...tearing up now thinking about it. Do what you think is right. I'm all for being int he room holding them and just being with them. Not easy at all hate it for you.

No whimper, no fear. They just slip away.

I've had to do this twice.... It's very peaceful to the dog, but extremely sad for the person. I took solace in the fact I was holding them when they left this world.
