Default Need help Dodge Cummins Engine

OK now it's my turn to ask for someones expertise help. Friday a group of us went to Gadsden to go camping. Upon arrival at the office I shut my truck down. When I came out to move to a campsite and cranked the truck (2004-2500) I smelled diesel fuel. I shut down the truck and inspected under the hood and under the truck. What I found was that I had sprung a leak in my fuel line between the pump and injector (#5). Once in a parking spot I removed the line to inspect it and found that a leak had sprung up at "A" ..."B" is what both ends look like in the original condition, just that I braised the line at point "A" as a temp when I got home yesterday. I'm going to get a NEW line, but that is not the problem. The line had been off overnight. I replaced the line Sunday morning and the truck started and I was going to move it to a spot so as to leave both my truck and 5th wheel there (nothing opened over the weekend) until a new line comes in. After I replaced the line Sunday morning the truck started fine. While waiting for the manager so he could show me where to park I shut the truck down. When I was going to move it to the parking spot it wouldn't start, wouldn't hit a lick, had to unhitch the 5th wheel and have both towed to the parking spots. Could I of gotten enough air in the line as to keep the engine from starting. Do I have to bleed all 6 lines when I install the new line? The part that has me baffled the most is that after the line was off overnight, and then replaced, it started right up. I even shut it down while hooking up the 5th wheel a couple of times and no problem re-starting. I have 3/4 tank of diesel in the tank. As I cranked it diesel was leaking from the #5 line and pouring on the ground.

attempting to load picture...having a problem with it.:banghead

I did catch one NICE Bass while there. Picture taken at arms length, away from the camera. Nice approx 18" Bass.

Ron what year is your truck? I have a 2000 model. My wife ran mine out of fuel about 2 weeks ago. I thought I would have to bleed all the lines, but as it turned out there is a "bleeder" on the top back side of the fuel filter case. [ looks like a valve stem from a tire]. All I had to do was crank engine...release key [don't turn key off] this allows the fuel pump to continue pumping. While I did this a friend of mine pushed the needle in on the bleeder and bled the air [he is a retired master tech from Chrysler]. Then he sprayed either in the air intake....real light and slow just to keep it running until it rebuilt the fuel in the lines. If you have any questions call me 850-217-7958. Clint

Ya, I would check to see if there's an air valve in the back/top.. if not.. Don't you have a water/fuel canister? If so maybe try cracking that open Bit.

I had a Ford 7.3 that did the same thing. I even took it to the closest shop. It ran crappy after I got it started. I shut it down after I pull it to the shop. It wouldnt start up again. The shop messed with it and messed with it and got nothing. It couldnt build up enough pressure to get the fuel to go back through it. THey worked o nit for 3 hours and got nothing. I wen tup there after talking to a friend. He said to pressurize the fuel tank. So I took an air compressor with a blow off attachment and wrapped a rag around it and started to pressurize the tank till it started seeping around the rag and I couldnt hold it back anymore. Then I had someone stay on the starter for a while, gave it a break but kept pressuizing the tank. It took 3 times and then it fired right up and ran good. Worth a shot maybe.

2004...... yes...comon rail injection, yes..23,000#'s psi. Ordered hard line $55.00. 2003 and later engines are primed by the transfer lift pump (mine is in the tank not on engine)when the key is turned on, runs2 seconds when the key is in the run position, runs 25 seconds in the crank position. If I had thought about it I would of removed the #5 fuel line, took a hammer to it and crushed the line. Don't know if I'd have enough power on 5 cylinders to tow 12,000#. Part will be in tomorrow, then heading to Gadsden. Just wanted to pick someone else's brain before I go (better to have many different ideas other then just my own, before heading out). I did get a good thought from Chris, and thats to bring starting fluid. I'll also bring a can of WD-40. I know I don't have a lift problem as fuel escapes the defective line, like a lawn sprinkler.....only under high pressure.:banghead

Sure glad it was #5 cylinder and NOT #6.....:doh

I'd use the WD-40 before using starting fluid. CR motors tend to really advance the timimg when using starting fluid . Might want to check FCA on the CP3 pump, if it sticks open it not want to start. There is a pressure relief valve on the rail might want to check if it is starting to go bad it will dribble and bleed off pressure. I have mine capped ( I've blown 4 of them on my '06) . If you need any help with the FCA ,PM me I'll walk you through it.

That CR motor makes me really miss my p-pumped 12 valvecummins.:banghead

OK for a update in case anyone should come up with the same situation. Picked up the injector line this morning and headed to the truck. Had the line installed in less then 5 minutes. Had Susan turn the key to the "RUN" posistion...but not engaging the starter. In this position the fuel pump should run for approx 25 seconds, and prime the system. Before I had her turn the key to crank it, I squirted about a second blast of WD-40 into the intake. That sucker busted off before it made a complete revolution. Drove back to Birmingham at 60MPH and got 13 MPG....hauling about 13,000#....I'm a happy camper today. Part $50.00, parking $4.00, gas in second vehicle $50.00....not as badhad it gone to the shop. :clap

By the way thanks for the tips I might of not thought of...Glad I didn't have to resort beyond what I thought would take care of the problem.
