Perhaps if the overtaking boat had given a two whistle blast of his horn (passing on your port side), to the slower boat, the slower boat would have had a heads up.

BINGO! This "Should" make the person in the overtaken be aware of what is going on around them.

One or two blasts still doesn't matter. Even if overtaking arrangements are made by both vessels, the overtaking vessel is still the "Give Way" vessel in this situation.

Grump is still correct.

What we had there is a failure to know what was going on around the overtaken vessel at all times.

This means the operator should have a rubber neck to do so. It's just the best defense .....know what is happening around you all the time.

That is the way I do it, as to NOT get in this type situation.

Make sure the operator of the other vessel knows your intent.

There is also rules stating that a proper lookout must be maintained at all times.

Another rule regarding "safe speed" should always be followed as well.

Safe Speed..... have you been on a lake with a big bass tournament. It's crazy. Saturday I was fishing a small club tournament with 25 boats, there was a college tournament, and a BASS federated tournament with 140 boats. MyCCwill run about 45mph wide open and I had boatsgoing by melike I'm standing still. I had a Skeeter that would run near 70 and it's fine maybe even safe with smooth water but get in a wake and your airborn.

After seeingthe two boats almost hit, I'mconsidering mounting a couple of bicycle mirrows on my console.

A rear view mirror would be a good thing to have. I just need to find a way to mount one on my Ranger.

My ol Ranger used to be pretty fast, but age of the boat and it's operator has slowed it way down. I generally cruise at about 40mph to conserve gas from this gas hog, as well as being able to see what is going on around me.

I wish Ala would enforce the boat Operators liscense rule. One problem we have is that our lake is very close to the Ga line, and many of our fishermen/ boats come from Ga. The liscense rule doesn't apply if you are from out of state???? How does that make sense?

Wow, if you are in the right and dead, does it really matter. Common sense tells you ( me ) you should look before just making a hard turn. I agree he had the right of way, not my point.

pappastratos (3/20/2010)Sorry, I think I would have ran him down,,,I know my 6'4" 270 pound son would have. If the back talked him, he would jump in their boat & thow them out,,,.

I met a guy who keeps a 14" silver salt water lure on a rod. When the skiiers & jet skiiers get too close, he throws it in their path,,,
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">I wouldn?t throw a 14? lure at anyone. I was at the Russian Freighter one day when a dude threw a lure at a diver (and snagged him) that ticked him off and the FWC was at my office the next day taking my statement and charges were pending. Two wrongs don?t make a right. Sometimes you just have to accept the fact that there are idiots everywhere.
