Well, it's warming up and ant mounds are popping up in the yard. I never really cared before we had our son but now that he is old enough to play in the yard I really need to get rid of them. I've had them attack me before and it's no fun. I worry about the little guy getting attacked and it scares the crap out of me.
Any great ways to get rid of them other than spending 100 dollars at lowes? I've tried the store bought and killer and it never seems to work. |

WHen you did the store bought killer.. Did you water it afterwards? Also usually if you just put it on the mound, they just move somewhere else because it's like free food and they look to look for there food.. I usually spread some a few inchs from the pile and around the area they are in... I also spray my yard with some of that bug/ant spray you hook to the water hose, I think its around 12 bucks or so..

Best stuff I have found...Kills em dead in just a few hours and are completely gone for good. Is some stuff you can get at a feed and seed store called Orthene. Stuff smells really really really bad but is potent. You can put it down in the dust form or it has the directions to mix it up in a hose tip sprayer or a back back sprayer....stuff does wonders, you just have to keep the can in a ziplock bag because it will stink up your garage or shed....
This is the link to the stuff if you are interested. http://rosecare1.stores.yahoo.net/pe004-1.html |

The OLE Take This.
The best thing I have found to kill ants is ACEPHATE. HI-YIELD makes it, and some others as well. ACEPHATE is a fine white powder that stinks to high heaven. Don't store it under the kitchen sink or above the washer& dryer. I keep mine outside under a lean-to off my shop. Just be sure and close the lid all the way when not in use. ACEPHATE comes in a can that is a cylinder, about 4in. round and bout 10 in. tall. One can will cost about $15.00 and treat alot of mounds. ACEPHATE will kill the ants rite in front of your eyes. It only takes alittle to be affective. I've tried other stuff like granulars and the next day I found that the ants wereusing the granulars to build thier mound with. I never wasted my money again on the granulars after using the ACEPHATE. I get my ACEPHATE @ Chavers or Mannings in Milton. I don't think you can buy the ACEPHATE at the larger hardware stores. May need to go to a feed and seed store. If you get the ACEPHATE you will need to keep the lid on it and keep it dry. It is a very fine powder and will clump if moister gets to it. I use a 1/4 cup plastic measureing cup to put the ACEPHATE in , then sprinkle on the mounds. I use about 2 cans a year for my ants. if the mounds gets big I will poke at the mound with a stick to get them stirred up and then treat the outside of the mound only. treat the out side of the mound and any that leaves or comes will have to cross the ACEPHATE. I call it the ring of death. You can treat a mound and come back in 1 hr. and they will be DEAD. |

First, do you have a sprinkler system? If so put a few squirts of IVORY dish washing liquid soap in line somewhere.Water after full sun in the aternoon. Will kill or make move crickets, mole crickets, spiders, affids, mold and alot of other things, it has very few side effects if you do mild over a long period. Try it, and spray it in your soffits, it'll keep the bugs out. If no sprinkler, just make a solution in a bug sprayer and go to town.

Ortho Fire ant killer, black bottle with yellow cap
get it Lowes, Home Depot ,, etc. I have tried them all. This IS the best. Use when dry, I slightly disturb the mound, spread about 1 or 2teaspoons, next day they are gone. |

I usually treat the whole yard with Diazenon (Spelling). You treat mounds and they just move, get a spreader and a couple of BIG bags of Diazenon and treat front and back, you will be able to smell your yard a block away, and every critter will die, but you are done for the summer unless we have some massive rains and then you might need to repeat.

I take a 3 foot piece of 3/4" pvc pipe cut at an angle and drive it down the nest, then pour about 2 cups or so of regular unleaded gas and POOF ants are gone. No need to light it, the fumes alone kill them. Also try and put some gas in a squirt bottle for wasp nests instead of expensive sprays.
