Framerguy (3/5/2010)My story:

I was sitting up late working on my computer when someone opened the front door of my trailer and walked into my living room. I kept and still keep a loaded Sig automatic next to my computer and I had that weapon out and leveled on that boy's chest about the same time as I recognized him as someone who comes and goes in the trailer next door. It's funny how quickly the mind can assess a situation and bring things into perspective, I lowered my weapon for 2 reasons, he didn't appear armed and had no weapon drawn, and I knew that he and his buddies were smoking quite a quantity of bud earlier in the day while working on their boat. He seemed to be totally disoriented and didn't even know which trailer he had entered and I was out of my chair screaming at him and putting him down on the floor forcibly so I could get better control of the situation. This was at 3:00 AM and, when he eventually saw my weapon in my hand, he apologized (sort of) and left the trailer saying that he was going "down town to get a Phillips screwdriver"!! This was just one of his many incoherent jabberings. A woman walking her dog found him lying in a deadend cul de sac later that same morning next to his van which had run out of gas. He was unconscious and the police were called. It was finally determined that he had OD's on some kind of pills trying to stay high from the pot buzz earlier and he was put into a detox program and given a whole evaluation as to his ability to cope in society or be put into an institution for lethal drug abusers.

Now, let me tell you what MY reactions were during this encounter and I wonder how many of you would have the same reactions. At the moment of entry into my trailer, I had drawn and leveled down on this young guy's chest before ever really thinking about what to do. After I recognized him and had spoken to him to ascertain his intentions, I found out that he was high and didn't even know that he was in MY trailer!! At that point, my adrenlin was pumping so strongly and my senses were so highly keyed that I started to shake. I shook like I had just laid out in the snow for an hour bare naked!! I had trouble talking, my legs were weak, I felt like my whole body was physically drained of its strength.

Now, many replies state that the person would "easily" pull the trigger or have no remorse or feelings about shooting another person but I really wonder if they realize what goes on inside their body during the first moments of a critical encounter??? Could you "hold it together" in a crisis situation? Would you be able to assess the situation and make a determination whether deadly force is needed? I could have easily shot an innocent man for overindulging in illicit drugs which didn't have a thing to do with my personal safety or the reason for his apparent intrusion into my trailer. True, it all boils down to the individual situation and how one reacts and what happens in those first few moments when you confront an intruder. But, to simply state that you could draw down and shoot another person to death with no hesitation is a bit over stated when you really don't know exactly WHAT you would do given the set of circumstances involved in YOUR case!!

If you cannot stay calm enough to analyze those first moments of the encounter, and most times it will be obvious what that person's intentions are immediately, and react in a logical manner, you could very well shoot someone who was just mugged and stumbled into your house dazed and seeking help!! There are many other scenarios which could be cited to further substantiate knowing what to do when that door opens and coming to a snap decision about friend or foe. It's the same thing in night combat, you don't just shoot and ask questions later in all situations.
Good read. One thing that can fix all of that is to keep your doors locked at all times. My habit is to lock the door behind me as I enter my home. Whether I feel safe or not, it's just a habit. When I get in my vehicle, the doors lock before I start the engine. Just a habit. There will never be anyone stumbling into my home. The doors are always locked. If someone finds their way into my home, they have forced their way in and that person is not simply in the wrong house on accident.

People always ask me why I just locked the door behind me when I get home. It's just a habit that will keep things like you describe from happening. Anyone entering my home has to do so at my discretion. If I do not knowyou through the peep hole, you are greeted at the door with a loaded weapon in one hand behind my back. My wife had a vaccum salesman try to put a foot in the door un-invited one time when I was not home. If I would have been home, this guy would have had a 9mm pressed against his chest with a stern warning to not take another step. She no longer opens the door to anyone she does not know when I am not home.

If someone is in my house messing with my family - definitely yes! Hey Garbo, I sent you a pm a few days back and have not heard back from you. Just wondering if you received it??

Thanks,
