What did the bullet riccochet off of?

.50 cal don't riccochet, they tend to distroy what they hit.I guess an exception might be that he was right on top of a metal target. He could then call himself lucky ( and stupid). But even at that he would have to be shooting at armor plating to get a riccochet from a fully loaded .50 cartridge.
