Default car "chips"

I've heard you fellow pff'ers talking about 'chips' to put in your diesels and trucks and whatnot to increase h.p. and fuel efficiency. I'm wondering if i can get one for my mustang, how hard would it be to install, and where i could purchase it locally. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

You will have to do your research. Most of the plug and plays aren't worth the money for the slight mpg pickup you may have. If your looking for a performance increase some of them will give you enough hp increase to feel it. A lot times you have to run premium fuel though.

What type of Mustang to you have and what type of mods have been done. Running a carb or EFI?

There is no need to spend any money on a chip for a gas burner unless there has been alot of mods made to it. A diesel is a differnt beast, they can be chipped to trick the ECU, the results are awesome.

My 1990 Mustang GT came with a 302ci HO motor, 19# fuel injectors, 55mm mass air meter, 60mm throttle body etc. The stock ECU (computer) maintains the a/f ratio, fuel pressure, shift points, timing, vaccum etc.

I built a 347ci stroker motor for it, had to use 42# fuel injectors, large cam, roller rockers, advanced timing, lower thermostat, 125 hp of nitrous, trans brake, line locks, C-4 tranny with a 3400 stall, 70mm mass air , 75mm throttle body, RPM Performer intake, aftermarket fuel pump/regulator, etc. I spent $12k for all the work I did but I could not run it without issue. I had mine dyno tunes and a superchip built for it by the tuner. The chip then allowed the ECU to control everything as if it was still stock. Mine had 165 hp from the factory and after the parts swap and the dyno tuning it put down 415 RWHP. The chip had it running perfect, the chip also had a nitrous tune, it backed the timing down 5 degrees while bottle feeding it.

Tune with a chip if nitrous is added or you to an intake, header, and cam change. any other time is a waste of money.

With a good tune, you might get about 50hp more along with whatever mods you have and same some MPG's.. I've got EFI live on my crew cab truck,a forum member bought the unit which is about 900 bucks..It comes with 2 lincese's to tune whatever you tune..I would get it professional tuned though..

I believe most stock diesels are way under tuned from the factory for low end torque. I have a friend that has one for his dodge and when you put it in full race that thing is a beast with no other mods. Gasoline engines for the most part aren't that way they are factory tuned for horsepower higher in the rev range to increase fuel economy. I have had several chips for various performance cars in the past and they basically did nothing that could be felt without other modifications. One thing that I found out that is interesting is on Yamaha outboards the new 4.2 is exactly the same for the 225, 250, and 300. The only difference is in the ECM for fuel/air/spark. So chips can make a difference depending on the factory tune of the engine.

Like stated above, we first must ask what year is your Mustang and what motor?

Next check out these guys...trust me, they know their Mustang tunes and offer free tunes for life:

The new 5.0s are getting gains of 30+ hp at the wheels with more possible.

By the way: stay away from "chips"...tuners are the way to go.

In that case my friend, your best bet is to just drive it like it is and keep it in good shape. You'll save far more money fuel economy wise by adjusting your driving habits. And I'm no Mustang expert, but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be worth the time or funds to try and squeeze more power from it either. The new 2011+ V6s though are another story...

No disrespect to your car in any way (my sister had an '03 V6 Mustang for a while), but just drive it.

EDIT: Just remembered seeing you post the pics a while back when you got it and how it only has like 40k miles for an '03...shoot man, definitely don't mod it or anything if it's still in that great of shape! Haha
