Just wanted to throw this out to let those who don't know ( I didn't). My wife n I were working around the yard and saw a brown spider w/ a big abdomen n long legs w/ black markings on the joints of the legs. It looked a little wierd so I turned it over and it had a bright orange hourglass on it. My wife looked it up, and found out they are very common in the south. They are twice as venomous as a Black Widow but twice as docile. Take a look at this link and look at the egg sack, cause I know alot of you have seen em before. I had 5 wooden chairs outside and when I turned them over, everyone had eggs and a female guarding them. These were chairs we use almost every day. So far (2 weeks) I killed almost 2 dozen males, females and egg sacks. Take a look around for you and your kids sake. Am I just one of the uninformed?

I had never heard of them either until a friend forwarded information after several were found in their neighborhood's mailboxes recently. Soon afterward, we found one under the handle of our mailbox. Time to start looking under our outdoor chairs as well.

There was an article in the NWF Daily News last weekend about the Brown Widow. The Brown widow doesn't hide in the dark like the Black widow.

I was trimming my hedges last week and killed probably a dozen of them. They had webs built in the hedges. I had never heard of them until I got an e-mail last month talking about them.
I did some research and I'm sure that's what they were. |
