Default Beavers in Bayou Chico

Okay, not a joke. These are the four legged, flat tailed water mammels. Night before last during the heavy rain some of them came into our neighbors yard and felled a small willow tree then drug it out into the bayou. She said the tree had cost $300.

What to do? I am not worried about my 200 year old Live Oak, but how about our friends young trees?

We had a report that the beavers are building a dam on Jones Creek up by Old Corry Field Road. Now this may be a blessing as we have needed a retention pond to trap runoff from the streets and shopping centers. Alledgly, some govenment agency has been working on getting a retention pond, but nothing has been accomplished. Maybe nature is taking care of that problem.

Anyone have any ideas on stopping the beavers from eating our trees? Do beavers have any natural enemies? Are beavers good to eat?:hungry

I guess I will take my jon boat up the creek and try to get some pictures of the beavers and their dam. I will try to remember my paddle.

Get in touch with Felix on here. He had a beaver problem. Don't know if he ever figured out a solution. But you have to have a free permit to try and trap beavers from what I remember.

$300 for a willow tree?

Use the gun on the person who charged that much for a damn willow tree.

They have some plastic flashing for young fruit trees that is a strip of plastic that spiral winds around the trunk to suit yet expands as the tree grows.

Or put some metal stakes, poles, or 1/2" metal conduit pieces pounded into the ground around the trees about 4" apart.

Their damn must be pretty close nearby.

I bought and set some traps, but never caught anything. Just putting the traps out in the areas they were frequenting seemed to run them out of the area. For a while anyway... they're back now so I'm back to the task of busting up their dam every now and then. I'm now wishing I hadn't given away that 12+ pounds of gunpowder... could make dam destruction a lot less tedious and a lot more fun.
