Anybody out there conforming to the "survivalist" label? IMHO a survivalist is one who's hoping for the best but preparing for the worse.
These like minded folks are storing food, water, seed, ammo and barter items. They are growing or learning to grow most of their own food, learning how to can, dry and store food for any situation where one might not be able to get to a store for days, weeks, months or more. Mormans keep at least a 2 year supply on hand. A collection of hand tools will also come in handy if the power grid no longer operates. They also learn what local wild plants are edible (cattails for instance), how to raise and butcher animals (most of you already know this), how to purify water, and even basic security for you home and family. Some have a packed bag, called abug out bag or BOB, prepared in case they need to quickly leave home for a more secure location, called a bug out location or BOL. Most I know are not weidos, just want to be prepared for whatever this uncertain world could throw at them. If nothing ever happens, all the better. I consider myself as being somewhat prepped but not nearly enough to be comfortable should utilities and commerce ever come to a halt. Maybe a survivalist topic thread could be added if there's enough interest. Rick Last edited by shootnstarz; 01-02-2012 at 11:29 AM. |

yaupon is a good source of caffeine, wouldn't want to be without that
![]() It would be the loss of large scale centralized distribution systems that would hurt us most, and commodities from far way like coffee. A focus on local business and local sources to strengthen and grow them would be a good idea regardless. Last edited by Duke S; 01-02-2012 at 01:52 PM. |

An old whole earth catalog and a copy of Euell Gibbons would be a good start.
