Default What's up with all the JUNK Rod and Reels?

For the past several years, there have been Really cheap combos at all the big box junk outlets. I mean $19.87 spinning combos.

But, yesterday morning I went by Half Hitch in Panama City and they had a ton of this type tackle as well. I would have never dreamed that I would see that type of tackle in a "Just Good" tackle shop, much less a so Called "Great One". These things are almost "Disposable". Crap is not an understatement as to the quality of the product I am speaking of. Who is buying this stuff, and what are they doing with it? I hope noone sees this as a bashing, but I have never seen so much Trash as far as fishing tackle goes.

I see where you once a year tourist would want something like this. One thing is for sure the combo won't last til next year, and China is loving it.

Why?

If you are in the retail business you have to have an offering for everyone. They have them because the sell 20 of them a day to tourist and cheapskates. When people are on vacation they want a book of matches not a Zippo.

We carry quite a few of those cheap combos as well here Curtis. Where our shop is located we get more tourists than anything else and they usually don't want to spend more than 30.00 for a rod and reel since they will probably just leave it behind when they are done with it. You have to cater to everyones needs and budgets.

Just so you know...at Cabela's...some of those "junk combo rod's and reels" carry a 25 year no questions asked warranty.

Not oinly that, I noticed when I stopped by to meet you, that you also rent outfits. Do what you need to do. Heck I could put an alarm system in a few minutes, and rented them to people going on vacation, much likeyour snowbirds.

You see you get your touristas that come down and couldn't care less about a name brand, they just want to say that they wet a line while they were on vacation. A bunch of them are left at the condos or where ever else they stay at when they leave. If you buy junk it doesn't hurt when you leave it behind.

Or they leave it next to the road or in dumpsters which is why I go junkin every Sunday and Monday.....I got 2 or 3 years worth of Gotchas, pyramid sinkers and circle hooksand enough rod guides and other salvage to last me for a lifetime...at least theres a silver lining lol....

Curtis, I've still got cheap combo's I bought when I was a teen:doh Then again I am cheapoke

Funny story...... I bought a big ole Penn Roddy surf combo from Half Hitch in Destin a couple years ago for $35.00. I have caught 5 + foot sharks on it, and I went out w/ some friends on their boat(offshore) and brought it. Captain of the boat said I didn't need it cause he had all the high $$$ stuff. Well I brought it, and it ended up saving the trip by catching the 3 biggest fish (cow dolphin, and 2 big kings) sooooo those 3 fish paid fer that combo and it's still going strong.

I'm a stickler about taking care of my gear so thats probably why it last. You just wanna know how many of us can make a penny bleedoke:letsdrink:letsdrink:letsdrink
