When I try to trim my outboard up or down and it only make a clicking noise?? Also, is a solenoid and a relay the same thing?? Thanks

Yes, pretty much the same thing. Visibly different, but they work the same. Could be several things, clicking both directions is indicative of a bad connection or a bad tilt and trim motor, rarely do both relays go out at the same time, if the engine starts and runs then you have pretty much ruled out a bad connection. What model engine are we working with.

solenoid for up and solenoid for down. You can swap them around and see if the problem moves to be sure. I have a 1996 115 Yamaha 2 stroke and had to replace one a while back. They are mounted under the cowl with three solenoids in a row, two trim and one starter, one jumped off the next.
