For downloads I use Emusic.com http://www.emusic.com/which requires a monthly subscription.Amazon.com oftenhas specials on album and single song downloads.

I also recommend slacker radio http://www.slacker.com/and pandora radio http://www.pandora.com/#/for streaming music.

Amazon is my favorite. Make sure to download the Amazon Downloader. This will take music you download and automatically drop it in iTunes. (Assuming you have an iPod/iPhone.) Amazon is always cheaper or the same price as iTunes and generally has the same selection. Also Amazon sells MP3 music, where as iTunes sells AAC (which only work on iPhone/iPod). So with Amazon, if you ever decide to get an MP3 player that's not an Apple product, you won't have to convert your entire library.

If your going the free route the only reasonably safe way is via a bit torrent. Google"utorrent", download it. Then search for music at mininova.org , thepiratebay.org,or isohunt.com. uTorrent is the prefered bit torrent downloader. Most of these sites allow downloading of software, music, movies and much more. Not sure of the specific legalities, but this is "Pirated" material.

Read a "techie" bulletin just a few days ago that "Limewire" is implying virus scanning and "wants" to become the most "virus free" torrent P2P system out there.

Buyer beware: although torrents (P2P clients, utorrent, limewire, etc) are the easiest way to get "stuff"; much of the content is illegal. There are ISP's that do prosecute (Mediacom, Cox, etc). And the content can be over laden with nasty surprises.

That being said: they have lots of content and recommend before down loading anything: read others comments about the content.

See this is what i was wanting to know. I dont have an ipod right now or an iphone. I will never have an iphone because their service sucks. but My phone is a mp3 player also, and it has a sd card. I can plug the sd card straight in the front of my laptop and look at my pictures from phone and transfer them i think. I want to transfer music to the sd card so when i put it back into my phone i can listen to music.

I've used Limewire for years and do not run any anti-virus software due to performance reasons and have never contracted a virus in my life (knock on wood)...at leastnot one that is too large for me to remove myself. I normally just click on the ones that have good ratings and the largest amount of sources. This way may be completely wrong, but has worked successfully over the years...! If you're looking to pay- iTunes is extremely reliable and great selection.
