I am looking for someone to cut holes in a concrete block and brick wall. It is approximately 13 inches thick and I need several holes cut. Can someone recommend someone local for this.
Size of holes?
Are we talking 1" or 8'?
Cutting in Windows or doors ... Or just need to get a few wires through?
IDS is who does most of the cutting/ boring in this area.
Not cheap - but they are effective and cut with water ... So no airborn dust.
Smaller holes could be done with rented hammer drill.
at 13" thick there will be quite a bit of over cut which will more than likely cut through some needed rebar at the top of the doors and windows. You need them to wire saw the openings. ABC has an office in Daphne. 251-625-1100.
Spencer at IDS or Russ at ABC is essentially your two choices. Both guys are good folks.
Do you know if your CMU is filled? If you are trying to do this on the cheap, get a hammer drill and drill out the corners. Lay it out on both sides of the wall. You can rent a demo saw and cut it. You can also rent a core drill. Problem is after you buy a bit and a blade, rental, and a hammer drill, your better off paying IDS/ABC to bang it out.
Wow.... ok - thats a tremendous amount of cutting.
You may have already done so - but make sure you are going to still be structurally sound. You may need to pour headers and extra cells in the blocks on either side of the openings.
Are you going to be adding treated wood blocking inside the openings - for conventional doors and windows to attach to?.... or are you sizing the openings for steel jambs (commercial type)?
At that thickness - you are going to run into quite a few issues if you dont have the answers before you get to the questions.
Just things to think about before you turn someone loose with a saw and a hammer.
Like FFV said if these are brick veneer exterior load bearing walls you are going to need lintels installed above the area to be cut out. I've never done the actual work but I've done the structural drawings and instructions.
