Default How to get right amount of backing?

I'm about to spool a couple of reels and have a 300yd spool of mainline for each, but I want to fill the rest of the spool with a lighter line on the bottom. How do you guys fill the spool with the appropriate amount of backing?

I was thinking of loading the reel with main line, then adding the backing on top till full. Then I was going to use a cordless drill with a larger spool chucked in it to pull the line off. This will now be in the "proper order. Now was going to spool it off again onto another spool to get it "backwards". Then spool onto reel in correct position again. Seems like an aweful pain, but I cant think of another way...

Using the line capacity #'s on the reel is a no go for two reasons. It lists mono. I have braid and have found that manufacturers "equivelent to mono " size comparisons to be WILDLY innacurate. Also, I am loading two different size braids. Big on top, small on bottom. Hopefully nothing will get me to the small stuff. Ok, actually... Hopefully something WILL!!!

Anyone have any secret tip that is obvious to an intelligent person, but slips past me for various reasons...

IF you're really lucky, both reels are the same and you have spare spools, ya only have to do the procedure once. If not, just like you described it.....And have spare batt for the drill charged.

Reels are same, but were talking LARGE conventionals. Spools not easily removeable and no spares...

Why would you want smaller braid as a filler? Are you filling them with braid only? No mono on top?

take it to a local tackle store. If you've already bought the line, we'd be glad to use our machine to spool it for free. we also have plenty of braid, and mono to choose from.

it takes about 5 minutes, and will also drastically reduce line twist by using the machine.

I have spools 300yds of 80lb braid for the main line. And have a couple of partial spools of 50lb for filler. And yes, I plan to put a 60lb shock leader on top, but only about 20yds or so.

I would just hate to put too much of the 50 on there and not have room for all of the 80.

No takle shops here with line spooling equipment, except bass pro about half hour from here. Didn't buy any of the line, reels, or rods there...

I see. Good way to get rid of some braid you don't need and would never get to while fishing. "hopefully".

Default The easy way.

Attach your backing to the line using a secure connection and crank the line on until you get the correct amount plus a little more. Clip the line and pass it around a smooth rod. (I use the antenna on my truck.)

Hold on to the end of the line and walk all of the line off the reel. You only have to walk 1/2 as far and you have the end you need to tie to the reel right in your hand. Clip the line at the reel then thread the other end of the line through your guides and tie securely to your reel spool.

Crank the line back on and you are good to go. I like to really pack the line tight.

This is the easiest way I have found to get the exact amount you need.
