We are currently looking to get a German Shepherd puppy. We have found some year old and older ones as rescues on CL but I would like to find a breeder or rescue locally with quality pups. Any thoughts?

Are you planning on showing or breeding? If not then I would not worry about it having papers. If you are planning on those then get breeder information from the AKC. AKC has classifieds.

No plans except we just want a good dog. Not gonna show or anything. We have been pretty lucky with rescues in the past some of them with amazing stories attached. But our current shep came from a forum member as a 1yo and had some training already. That was great to have a dog with a head start and I was just hoping to find another with a good genetic lead.
I would like to know about your neighbor's breeder. Thanks.

AKC breeder search if you choose to go that way.

You may want to check with local trainers then. Often times a trainer will have access to people who need to get rid of pets for varying reasons and they are pets they have already trained. May not get AKC but that won't really matter.

Whatever you do, do yourself a favor and make sure the breeder provides hip guarantees. Each parent should have hip certification from the Orthopaedic Foundation for Animals (OFA), Hip Dysplasia is very common in German Shepherd Dogs (GSD). There's nothing worse that getting attached to a puppy then having to have him/her put down due to hip dysplasia.
I raised and showed GSD's for conformation and obedience when I lived in Hawaii. Best breed there is, in my mind. Ed |

How is Akito doing? I haven't seen any pics lately on facebook. Hit me up and I can give you information for the same breeder if you would like.

Akito is in the truck with us right now. He is doing great! He is such a huge part of the family and is so tolerant of the kids. We are getting a puppy mainly for him. Once the kids go back to school we are afraid that he will be lonely.
We are on our way to Mobile to see a rescue shep and see if they get along. Not really counting on bringing that one home unless he is really clicks with us.
