Default Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council

Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council
Gulf Council Update - April 2017
The Council voted to begin developing amendments that consider allowing Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama to manage their harvest of recreational red snapper out to 200 nautical miles. Each state would be allotted their historical percentage of the gulf-wide recreational harvest, and the program would be considered for the years 2019-2021.

What about Florida and Texas?

The states wouldn't be managing anything if they're "allocated" something from NMFS. It would just be the same ole with NMFS managing the states.

Has anyone ever determined how they know how many fish the recreational people catch ? I can count on both hands (don't have to use my feet/toes) the number of times. my fish have been counted. Since I don't normally target snapper, I can count those times on 1 hand.

Alabama has made an effort with the Alabama Snapper Check. Actually, anyone "Landing" in an Alabama location are required to report their red snapper catch for each trip. They even have an app for it.

I don't believe the feds will give up control of anything they are not forced to... NMFS and Gulf Council have made a giant mess of our fishery and I think they'd like to keep it that way.

I checked the Outdoor Alabama site, no, its not active. But probably because there is no active red snapper in proximity to our (Alabama) waters. I'll check with the local office Monday. The site page and apps should be fully functional by the time the Alabama and Florida state red snapper seasons open in a few weeks.

Available online and on the Alabama Pocket Ranger App- for both IOS and Android platforms.
