Fresh raw = Green. About 3 cups salt per 10 pounds. Boil them till they are done to your taste. May have to soak them for a while or add a pile of ice to make them soak up salt. Careful doing that. Gotta keep sampling till they get the right amount of salt. It can get too salty real easy this way...

ReelDuel (8/21/2008)How long does it take for you to eat 40# of boiled peanuts?? Dang lot of nuts. Not like you can use them in a recipe or something right. Or is there a boiled peanut pie the you Mississippi folks make..hahhahaha
You'd be suprised at how fast 40# of peanuts can go but if you want to you can put some in 1 gallon freezer bags and freeze them for a saturday afternoon football game!

Gonnamissher (8/21/2008)About how long on average? Sorry to keep asking but I tried boiling on the stove and it seemed like I boiled for 2 hours and still had rock hard peanuts.
2-3 pounds can take anywhere from 1-3 hours depending. It's not an exact science by no means. Cook till you like the softness. Then let them soak till you like the saltyness.

They sale them already boiled by the pound.
Yeah I know, I usually buy them from the produce Guy that parks by the Winn Dixie near the Theo Barrs bridge. I just thought I'd give them a try this weekend while I watched the rain. :banghead:banghead:banghead

I'ts hard to beat a boiled peanut. Salt the water till it tastes like sea water. Add washed clean green peanuts, the little young ones with a few pops are the best tasting, bring back to a rolling boil. One hour at a rolling boil then turn off the heat and let them cool. They soak up water and sink as they cool. Fresh dug young peanuts cook faster than older drier ones.

There is as much difference between fresh peanuts and old peanuts as fresh fish and old fish. Look for light colored soft shell that is moist with no dark spots. Open a few and taste them, if their good raw they will be great boiled.

The ones that come out of Chipley have always been the best to us. They are the"jumbo" ones and are really full inside. We usually start seeing them around September or October depending on the weather. If it rains really bad and we get storms, they are out in September. I think the post mentioning Bonifay area, these are the same ones. If any of you guys ever try these from this area, you'll always go back to them every year. They are the caddillac of "green peanuts"! Right on with the gallon freezer bags, it helps make it through the football season.

I cook the raw peanuts you can buy in the store for about 8 hours.I moved the cooking outside though becausedoing it on the stove withCayanne pepper in there was like getting hit with very mild mace for 8 hours.

Wedecided to boil some one night whiledrinking beer. We started boiling around 5:30pm. By 1:30am we were drunk, out of beer, and the peanuts weren'tdone yet. Plan ahead.
