I'm sure that's great for the reef! Concussion and ricochets and lead fragments, there's no sense in shooting the lion fish to save the reef when you mess it up in turn. Great proof of concept but still a terrible idea IMO. Just use a spear like everyone else.
You clearly didn't watch the video. The ammunition is lead free and made from non-toxic components, thus adds much less (0) lead to a reef than fishing it does. Also, AS THEY ANNOTATED AND DEMONSTRATED IN THE VIDEO YOU OBVIOUSLY DIDN'T WATCH, they would attempt to shoot the lionfish over sand to reduce damage to the reef.
Could they accomplish the same with a spear? Sure, THEY could, but this was mostly likely a stunt to get media attention and possibly encourage more people to go hunt down lionfish. And I can say it worked. A friend, who doesn't even fish in saltwater, texted me a link to this video 2 days ago, because it was interesting. So I'd say their overall impact is still a net positive.
