I will be down to Pensacola Beach in a couple weeks and would like to fish the pass. I have a 21' bowrider and am bringing it. I hear about fishing the pass for all kinds of stuff. I would like to be able to take the ladies along and was wondering where and how. Can you drive to it any more?
If I boat it where would I anchor? What kind of fishing should I do. Tides .. bait ?? Any help will be greatly appreciated. |

I don't think I would anchor if I was you unless I was going to redfish. Tides don't really matter- moving water is better, high or low I don't really care. You should have a rod rigged with a spoon like a half ounce sidewinder for bonitos or spanish. You can also try the jetties for reds, flounder, or whatever. Sharks should be around especially the beach on the west side of the pass. Sight casting live baits should allow you to sting one with a hook. You might throw the spoon around bouys and markers- caughtcobes that way before. Godd luck. The scenery will be beautiful even if you don't catch anything, but you will catch something if you try some of this stuff.

You can't drive into it from the Ft Pickens side. You can drive somewhat to it from the Ft McRea side (Johnson Beach).
Deciding to anchor or not depends on the time of day and tide movement. On some days the anchor only slows you down. But one thing is certain its best fish when the water is moving. The cut South of the steel jetties will offer you some relief from the tide. But I wouldn't beach my boat there, too much boat traffic usually moving through. As far as what to fish for and what with "throw it and they will come". During tide changes almost every species moves through the pass. Good luck and tight lines.

Fishing the pass can be really productive.Check around the bouys for schools of live cigar minnows. If you see some, throw a cig on the downcurrent side of the schoollet it drift just a bit, then work it back.Kings and big Spanish will often patrol right outside the bait schools. The Massachusetts should be producing right now too.Anchoring close to it, fish downcurrent of the bulk of the wreck.Remember to use a 4 to 1 or 5 to 1 scope on your anchor.Strong currents there.

The pass is the gateway to the Bay. Every ocean fish that you can catch in the bay has to run through there.
It ican bea tough and scarry place at with the different tides, winds, boats running in and out. It can be scary for the ladies and be careful of where you anchor up. The Fort Picken Ramp at the entrance is not going to be a option for you. I think theQueitwater Ramp (is it still there?) may be your best option if your at the beach. The Mas may be a better place then the pass if you want to anchor up and fish and enjoy yourself. The pass is definitly more "business". I caught some of the largest Cobia , Redfish, grouper, Bonita, Jack Crevele, King and Spanish in the area, thatI have ever caught. |
