Default Fishfinder or Sounder

Whats the difference between the two?

I go to Garmin's Website and they have "Sounders" and "Fishfinders". Both have transducers. What's the difference? May be a newbie question, but I haven't got my big boat up and running yet, starting to look at electronics. Got a small combo unit for my little boat, but hate flipping back and forth between screens.

Is sounder a fancy word for fishfinder so they can charge more in that price range? Kinda like Lexus/Toyota/ Nissan Infiniti Acura/Honda?

Default RE: Fishfinder or Sounder

"The list of marine electronics is extensive, but most of it is rarely seen on small fishing boats except the fish finder. This is an incredible piece of equipment that can actually help you find fish if used properly. Many years ago there were depth finders which indicated the depth underneath the boat and that was it. There was no precise screen showing fish, or depth contours for that matter. Next came the sounders with printed graphs rolls that were very accurate if used properly. However, the real breakthrough was the advent of the LCD (liquid crystal display) sounder that showed both bottom contours and fish."

I believe they're the same.
