They do stack up thick around the passes when the water makes the magical drop in temperature. But it doesn't last for very long. You will get the biggest fish you have gotten all year though because of the weight they have put on for the spawning run. I got one on December 12 last year that weighed 7.1 lbs along with several other nice ones, none less than 3 lbs. I love it, its cool, no bugs and believe it or not if you find the right spot the competition seems to be a lot thinner to.
