My 550 ssg that I had did the same exact thing after about 6 months of use. The trip lever thingamabob broke. It's sitting in a closet since it was replaced with a Shimano reel on the rod.

I never had any sand in it. Lubed it and cleaned it properly. It just plain broke.

If you go to this link: http://www.fishermansheadquarters.com/PDF/550SSg_v7.pdf You will find where parts 27 and 28 are. The platic piece that held those peices broke on me. It had a small crack in the platic piece which did not allow the trip lever to operate properly.
